Come to the Bigger Weekend to find out

A completely revised and updated version of the book ‘Why Men Hate Going to Church’ by David Murrow should be available in the UK around mid December.  The original book was published in 2005 and set out the theories as to why men hate going to church. This revised edition is much more practical and includes study guides for 6, 12 & 24 sessions and also a Guy Friendliness Test.  It is a must read for those in church leadership

The book is divided in to 3 sections:

1          Where are the Men?

2          Church Culture v Man Culture

3          Calling the Church back to Men

I personally believe that there are significant differences in the way in which men and women behave and react.  This book highlights a number of them and then suggests ways in which churches can be more man friendly.  Many of the steps can be taken without a major upheaval in what we do; it is more about being aware of the things which could put men off or make them feel uneasy.

At a recent conference David was asked why he thought Jesus only chose men as disciples.  He replied that Jesus knew that it would take 3 years for the men to understand what he was on about but that the women would understand straightaway!  This is why men’s work takes longer and is much harder.

I am hoping that over the coming months in Baptist Men's Movement we will be looking at some of these issues and sharing them with you.

David Chawner has recently returned from the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand where he was co-manager of the chaplaincy programme and chaplain to England.  It wasn’t all plain sailing, but recognition of the importance of chaplaincy for the teams and their support staff as well as the travelling supporters grew during the tournament.

He was part of Engage which, as an organisation, helped churches to engage in the rugby community in a meaningful way during the World Cup.  The hope was that the value they brought to the event would open opportunities for ministry at future World Cups.  Before leaving New Zealand this hope was realised when the CEO of the 2015 World Cup expressed the desire to work with churches to provide this support when the event is held in England (and Wales).

A meeting will be held early in 2012 to discuss how this might happen.  Because of the links we have already established Baptist Men's Movement will be represented.  So watch this space.

A healthy breakfast

Burgh Baptist Church recently held a Men’s healthy breakfast. This comprised of scrambled egg, grilled bacon, beans and mushrooms (not fried) plus brown and white toast. Burgh Baptist organised three successful breakfasts in 2009 and has scheduled four breakfasts in 2010. We have run a successful contact club for 2 years inviting non Christian friends along to such events as clay pigeon shooting, bowls, scalextric, quiz night at the local pub, ten pin bowling etc. The Healthy breakfast was the idea of the Parish Nurse which is a Christian ministry run at the church, and last year different health topics were covered, but it has been decided that in 2010, the healthy breakfast should now be a level 2 event where by a talk would be given to the men about faith or testimony’ shared. The first one was on March 20th when the minister Colin Bowden gave a talk about his calling into ministry.
Colin Bowden, the minister of Burgh Baptist Church said “Four of us recently attended the BMM conference at Bosworth Hall Hotel, and came away fired up and passionate about men’s outreach ministry we were really inspired by all the speakers and enjoyed the fellowship of like minded men. We really feel the BMM is going places and has a vision to win men for Christ.” Following the inspirational conference Burgh Baptist now intend to screen the first 3 England matches in the world cup at the church and then gauge response, but crucial quarter final, semi final and final dated have already been pencilled in.
